I am what a lot of people in Eve consider a "BITTER VET". I think that title fits me well. I have several accounts in Eve that I use and I am the CEO of the GetCo corporation. I will give you a different view of Eve online IF you can put up with my rants...Sam McGrawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469766007187873633noreply@blogger.comBlogger26125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561276700143589744.post-4529156400010005152014-01-07T12:11:00.000-08:002014-01-07T12:12:21.189-08:00CSM8 August 2013 Summit Minutes (part 1)Been a little while since I have had a post. Been a little while since I have been motivated enough to write a new one. I have a few that are in draft mode but never published them because other Eve bloggers out there have beat those topics to death. Still, I may still publish them at some point. Oh yea, happy 2014...

I just printed out the minutes this weekend as as time allows I will read them and formulate my own opinions to share with all of you. Ever since 2013's fanfest I have found Eve to a a largely divided player base. Interestingly enough the minutes seem to reflect that in great detail. So lets proceed into the fist session. Download them here:

Session 1 Basic Introductions and Design Theory

FIRST PARAGRAPH I have issues with what CCP Pokethulhu says and I quote:

"Pokethulhu pointed out his role as an interim EP was needed to handle the basic day to
day tasks of the role. Pokethulhu stressed that he doesn't intend to take or hold the
position. He further stressed that his full-time job has nothing to do with his marketing
duties."

"It doesn't signal any intention on CCP's part that marketing is going to drive the development of the game."

"The CSM was satisfied with this explanation and understood the needs of day-to-day operation"

Did we forget something here? This is only a half truth. Let me refresh your memory and while I am SHAME on CSM for giving this a pass. Only a few of the things that I will discuss in this article were brought up before they were releases to the Eve player base and most of them were not. They were not happily accepted at fanfest either. There were times when they spoke about these new things and CCP was greeted with silence.

Here is a link to the video at Eve Vegas by CCP Pokethulhu (David Reid

Representin‘ for CCP will be Creative Director of EVE IP development
Torfi Frans Olafsson and Art Director of EVE IP development and one of
CCP‘s key concept artists Borkur Eiriksson.
Both have been part of EVE‘s core team for a very long time and in
various roles have contributed significantly to what the EVE Universe
has become over the years.1

While I was at fanfest I took notes and pictures. While he was onstage he spoke about many things and his connections to marketing and making Eve succeed in larger things are rest assured a top priority for both CCP and himself.

He not only spoke about the present and the future, just like ALL of the CCP developers did at this fanfest. They spoke about:

True Stories is a comic book loosely based upon a story from True Stories from the First Decade,
crowdsourced from the EVE community and adapted to comic book form. It
is something that we plan to do more of in the future, since the stories
of EVE players and their antics continue to amaze both us, the
mainstream media and the EVE community itself. The comic book will be
seperated into four chapters, each illustrated by a different artist,
which will be released digitally free of charge and then available for
purchase in pretty printed form.

EVE Universe – SOURCE takes a different approach. In
this thick, stylish lore-rich book, we are given an insight into the EVE
Universe, the races, the back story and the setting in more detail than
ever before. Loaded with both classic and original art from the
Universe, not only will SOURCE look splendid on your yin-yang coffee
table, but it will also provide you with a deep understanding and
immersion of New Eden, home of the immortal capsuleer (you).

Eve Stories which might be made into a Television series like Game of Thrones

EVE: Valkyrie

Dust 514

World of Darkness

They also spoke about micro-transactions which we all know went over SO well this summer. Here if a video on that as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_M3xPZSK_c

...and with this chart they are DUPLICATION this for every division that they cover.

So this will dilute the funds even more, stretch staffing out that further and make it to where it will take forever to get anything done. Remember the this blog in in response to the minutes from the August Summit!

CCP is going to continue to promote Eve into bigger and better things and in turn they will dilute the one thing that got them here to begin with. Eve Online. The fact that the CSM gave them a pass on this is horrible and the CSM should be ashamed. I am not impressed with the minutes so far. The integrity of the sandbox has been compromised.
Why write about this? Here is what made me do today's post:

Blog Banter #50 - Changes
Welcome
to the continuing monthly EVE Blog Banters and our 50th edition! For
more details about what the blog banters are visit the Blog Banter page.

* * * * *

With the Rubicon expansion being announced and the
SOMER Blink scandals (or non-scandals depending on your point of view)
that have erupted on the community at the same time, it truly feels like
an age of EVE has passed and a new one is dawning.

But which direction is it going? This blog banter can be about several different topics:

OK, I'll take the second option. I am Eve's new EP!

Where do you think EVE is going? Is it a good or bad vision ahead?

If you were EVE's new Executive Producer, where would you take the game?

What comes (or should come) after Rubicon in terms of the mechanics and ship balancing we've seen? (CSM8 not allowed to answer this one!)

Is there anything in EVE's ten year past that should be resurrected? Or buried and forgotten?

What is the future of the community? What should or should not change?

To answer question #1 I have to say that Eve is going in a good direction but they are doing it the wrong way. They have wandered off the path and don't know how to get back on it. How can I say this? Let me explain it to you! Go get something to drink and or a snack. Yea, this is going to be a long post. For those with short attention spans your going to hate it.

I want there to be proper immersion. CCP has left that aspect to the players and the players SUCK at creating the vision that CCP wants for the game. You can't have it both ways. To have a properly immersive game it has to be created that way. CCP has to have a clear vision on this and they have to stick to that game plan. The moment they veer off of that path the immersion breaks. This means involving SOMERblink, this meand involving all the gambling sites and this even means them listening to the CSM.

I want lore and let me be more specific, I want my lore NOT to be changed. I purchased all of the Eve books, read all of the Eve stories and all of the Eve created stories when they were created. Over the years CCP has stopped producing them and they fired their book creator. CCP is not very good at keeping their lore are they?! How can you have a good deep Eve story and immersion when you keep breaking it?

I want exploration through PvE. I do NOT want exploration through the means of PvP. I do not care how many times the PvP folks will say that this is a PvP game. I have been playing it now for OVER A DECADE and PvP is NOT my reason for playing this game. Stop trying to cram it down my throat at every opportunity you can. This includes YOU Jester and the rest of CSM that this applies to also!

I do NOT want Dust. Dust is NOT the future of Eve. Get it the hell out of here and sell it to some other company that cares. It is and will never be Eve online and it is NOT what I pay for. When I went to Fanfest this year I was highly dissapointed that 50% of it was about Dust. I did not go to the top of the world for Dust, I went for Eve online. Give me what I pay for.

To answer question #2 if I were Eve Online's Executive Producer I would be doing things more with croudsourcing and customer feedback then just listening to the CSM and a few loud mouths on the forums. I think Rixx Javix covered this pretty good in his post so I +1 what he said.

To add what Rixx did not cover I think that every time you log on you can have the option to answer a poll or questionaire. This would give the feedback that people like CCP Seagull are looking for without having to get it off the forums. We all know that 80% or more of the people that play Eve online don't read the forums. So why would you go there to get what your paying customer base is asking for or playing for? Mine the data you have with the methods available. This is something that CCP fails miserably on.

Hell, I could spend all day answering question #3 since it will take a lot of room to give it justice. I will shorten that into 3 main things.

First you need to improve on the Jove story and how the Sleepers work into that story. Good lore here, lots of information. CCP has let the story fail.

Second you also have to work on the other technologies out there that have not been explained fully from the lore yet. Those being the Takmahl, Talocan Technology and Yan Jung Technologies.

I would move along on the Sansha's arc. CCP had a good thing going there and crippled it horribly killing off the new community that was forming at that time. They need to get that back to where it was going, in a good direction with lots of player involvement. Right now it is stalled and not gaining any new players.

To answer question #4 I can easily give you a list of features that are what made me want to sign up for Eve Online that have been removed. Here is a good list for you to work off of.

1) Ghost Training - major good feature that was senselessly removed.
2) Motherships - Spent a lot of time training to get into one only to have it nerfed.
3) etc
4) etc
5) etc you all can add more in the comments if you like. Those are my biggest 2 complaints.

Things I also want to see removed from Eve online are what it has become. What do I mean? Well here are some other names for what it has become lately:

Eve is being turned into any one or all of those things listed above. Each one of those could and might turn into it's own blog at some point. Time will tell. Talk to any new player that eventually rage quits and this is one of the reasons why. Eve is becomming a very hateful game that does not encourage anything that is resembeling "good" lately.

Most of all I want to feel like I did when I was in this photo while at fanfest. Click on it to see the note I added. I am in the picture and thanks to Freebooted for having the photo! Eve has taken a turn for the worse. I THINK (and I hope) that Rubicon will take it in the right direction. Time will tell.
Has absolutely nothing to do with the current Eve lore that I can figure out but one that they went with regardless. I wonder if the CSM gave the green light for that also :-P Anyways, I figures I would give you my corps view on the 20th free expansion of Eve online. These are the current top 6 things
This is just making NULL sec mechanics on Sovereignty control through a new mechanic. MORE forced Pew Pew and needless griefing.

Thanks CCP Soundwaffle.

Here is a topic that really gets me on my soapbox and wants to fire up my ranting to whole new levels. Let me quote the latest one from Jesters Trek that has inspired today's blog.

So I quietly watched the F&I thread about the links and mind-links and waited for it to explode into a threadnaught, which didn't really happen. CCP Fozzie dev-blogged about it,
still no threadnaught. Here's a little secret: the CSM's influence is
cut by about half to two-thirds when there's no player revolution behind
it. I nudged forward the industrial rebalancing because I helped
create, guide, and shape player reactions to the first pass of those
rebalances. But if there was going to be a revolution on this topic, I
wasn't gonna be the one leading it.

Are you kidding me?!? This is the latest in about a dozen blogs from Jester about how he has help "CREATE, GUIDE and SHAPE PLAYER REACTIONS to what he thinks his vision of Eve should be. Not the majority of Eve players but his alone.

This was even more obvious when he was talking to us about how all of the Reasonable Things was being viewed by CCP and left out all of the industrial information. That information was later taken up by Unforgiven Storm as he championed what Jester intentionally left out.

Now this is a topic that has been covered since CSM1. So you have 8 different groups of people that has lists of what the players want to see fixed in game. Why is it that year after year, CSM after CSM that there are items on these lists that are just not taken to CCP for them to address?

You can find current information for this year found here:]

Eve Online: CSM Guest Blog “Reasonable Things” Crowdsourcing

and past information here:
August 2010 Prioritization Crowdsourcing (CSM)

You can go back further and further if your so inclined :-)

I believe that I am starting to regret voting for Jester and some of the other CSM members. Jester was my first choice and that is turning out to be a mistake. I did NOT vote for Unforgiven Storm and I am now thinking I should of. Eve is a very hard game both inside and out. It is both why I play it and also why it is giving me a huge headache like right now

Things ROCK MELTER is not happy with:

CSM8

Odyssey expansion (all point repelases)

Ship Tierside

Loss of Lore

Removal of Beta features

Lack of Beta promises

Current CCP Devs taking credit for past Devs ideas and works.

Your guys have any insight for me?

I did not post anything in July...

I thought of making todays rant titled "Cautiously optimistic vs giddily optimistic" but I am going to stick with cautiously optimistic. Why? Because every other blogger out there lately says the same thing when they do not want to take a stand on something and speak their mind. So I am cautiously optimistic.... so lets set the tone for today's Eve online rant.

I'm an optimist in the sense that I believe humans are noble and honorable, and some of them are really smart. I have a very optimistic view of individuals. As individuals, people are inherently good. I have a somewhat more pessimistic view of people in groups though.

Steve Jobs

I thought that I would at least put out there that I am watching and trying to figure out a lot of Eve things since Eve Odyssey was released. I have at least a half dozen blogs in "draft" form that I wanted to publish but they are very different from what my peers are posting. So much so that it made me NOT want to post them until I could figure out if we were playing the same game anymore. Then Poetic Stanziel pretty much summed up what my thoughts were today over at this post. I will post it here for those that are to lazy.

The CSM, after skipping it for a year, is back to their crowdsourcing
initiative. Unlike previous years, where the CSM just went ahead and
asked people to vote on development ideas and then those ideas being
ignored for a few years, this year CCP has actually asked the CSM to go
out and determine what people want CCP to work on. A list of reasonable
things. Basically they're little things, but with a tad more scope. The
CSM has whittled a list of 1300+ suggestions down to 99 suggestions.

(One of the problems with this list, is that there are quite a few items
that repeat previously listed items. Changing characters. Logi on
killmails. Ship velocity vectors. Fitting increases. Alliance fittings.
Clone timers. To name a few, all appear at least twice. I'm not sure why
repeats weren't culled from the final list.)

With CCP asking for the list, and the CSM having a reasonable idea of
what sorts of things CCP will look at seriously, there's a good chance a
large number of these items will make it on to the winter expansion
development slate.

We're supposed to choose between one and ninety-nine of the suggestions
(the CSM suggests choosing around ten items), arrange them in an order
that is important to us, and then submit them to the CSM.

You can read the entire list, as well as links on how to vote and where to vote at the "Reasonable Things" Evelopedia page.

I find #49 the most amazing in the list:

Get rid of the CSM. If they're not actually thinking and promoting
issues they have no value left. CCP already pays game designers.

Keywords: csm, useless
Notes: Selected by 4 CSMs: James Arget, mynnna, Sort Dragon and Trebor Daehdoow

This was selected by 4 of the CSM members. 3 of the 4 that I voted for on THIS CSM and I couldn't agree more!

I went to fanfest this year. A lot of people did. All the hype and all the expectation about what was going on that led up to this years fanfest has NOT happened so far. Not even close. A lot of the bloggers out there have not only been way off on what they THOUGHT Odyssey was going to bring but they are putting themselves out there as "cautiously optimistic" so they do not look bad on what they DO say. Anyone have enough of this sunshine being pumped up our backsides yet?

Now I love reading everything that Poetic Stanziel blogs about. I would say that 50% of the time I agree with him and the other 50% I would pod him if I could. Either way he writes it as he sees it and you have to respect him for that. I think I am going to do a lot more talking with him in the future if he is up to it since I missed him while at fanfest.

For those that were thinking this post is TL:DR here it is for you.

NOT happy with how the CSM is telling CCP what we want.

NOT happy with this list of 99 items that they say are important, hell, they didn't even fix the list that they posted for duplicate items.

NOT happy with CCP handling things lately with a bunch of "little things" and I can see this coming to a head real soon.

NOT happy with Odyssey as an expansion. I have passed the 50/50 mark. I am not at 49% approval rating and falling. I might go into a blog on that later but that is not why you guys come here.

Am I excited about the future of Eve Online? What what I have seen in the latest expansion I am only "cautiously optimistic". If you want more details tell me below in the comments.
Today’s rant is mostly observation on what I have been watching over the last 10 years in Eve online and what I learned first hand at this year’s Fanfest. I think that the trend I am looking at is nothing short of an evolution of MMO game playing.

Let me explain why and yes this is going to be a long post!

PvP players. You know who you are. You’re the bastards that try to, and occasionally go catch myself and my corporation members when we are playing poorly :-)

PvP players. Usually work in teams. In high sec we normally see gangs of 2 to 3 pilots doing successful ganks on the afk miners every day. Sometimes it is larger groups up to 7 players but it gets hard to tell if it is actually 7 players or someone that is ISBoxing it. (1)

PvP players. Usually just want to log on, get in a group of like mined people and blow stuff up. The higher the value the better it is for them. The easier it is to blow up makes it even better!

PvP players. They have changed in what they want to shoot. Will explain in another blog (2)

So now that we have loosely defined how a random but current group of PvP folks operate lets now take a look at the other half.

PvE players – usually work solo but do it socially. In my corp we talk about eve in both alliance and corporation chat. We sometimes will be mining in the same fields at the same time but we are not really doing it “together” so to speak. There is no dedicated “Veldspar asteroid – POINT!” when your mining this way. We will usually have an Orca (Rorqual) boosting us all through the system and everyone is happy.

PvE players – when they run missions usually have their main running the mission and their alt cleaning up after them. You might find 2 people actually playing together when they are newer to Eve but as their skills develop this tends to migrate over to a single player play style.

PvE players – that are in industry will have one alt that is good at trading while another alt is doing the hauling while still a 3rd or 4th or 5th alt is working another region doing the same thing. This is more a single player way of doing this because we have all been taught to play Eve this way. There will be a blog about this as well in the near future. (3)

PvE players are the players that are playing the game for a reason other than to blow things up. They play longer per day, have long term goals and are for the most part the backbone of Eve’s economy. Without them doing all the above work there would be no PvP.

PvE players – in some cases are the PvP players that have to do the PvE things so they can afford to do the PvP things that they like.

The above statements would not be accurate without some kind of graph or slide right?

50% play solo
25% play in a group
the other 25% do both.

So what can we draw from the above?

Well the first thing I see is that PvP takes money out of the economy and PvE puts it back in.

What are you talking about? How do you know this?

Time for another slide!

Here is just one item from the beginning of Beta till now. I have this data at home but it was also very nice to see Dr. Eyjólfur G also show the same data :-)

What does this show other then the obvious? It shows you the increase of Tritanium in both price and in volume. As larger ships are introduced to the game, there is a need for more Tritanium. Since there were not enough miners in the game to meed that need the price goes up. Simple economics.

You can see this trend again and again from item to item in Eve. This blog is not about that. I am just trying to justify what I said above with cold hard proof. That is one of the nice things about going to fanfest. You get to see and hear a lot of things that do not make it into Dev Blogs and you also get to spend the time talking with the Devs and ask them direct questions. It is well worth your time if you are that hard core of a player :-)

The next thing I see is that this was not how Eve started. It shows me that it is indeed a sandbox.

ok, ok! Why did I tell you all of this?

Because, Eve HAS changed. It has evolved and while it has evolved its player base has also changed. Players now use Kill boards to rank how well they are playing the game. It is not about the ownership of space or controlling the regions of the game any more. It is about who's kill board is the best. Who has destroyed the most and that is the bottom line.

When you can take a few million ISK in destroyers and add a few hundred million in miner kills to your kill board you view yourself as a winner. That is how the PvP people track their progress. They developed the tools to make sure that they could show how good they are at the game.

Just for clarification, I DO NOT SEE YOU AS A WINNER but I know some of you view yourselves that way. I don't mean any malice in that statement, just stating a fact is all.

I will add more to this theme in later blogs. This one is reaching the "wall of text" that most people try to avoid so I will let you add your comments below. The PvP people have their kill boards as their sandbox. What do the PvE people have? I will write about the PvE Sandbox soon™...

Today's rant is not one directed at any one person, it is a rant direct at a LOT of people. I made this video at fanfest that goes over a few of the new features that will be coming out in Odyssey. The Dev you hear talking is CCP Soundwave. This video is just over 11 minutes and gives you a little sneak peak in what to expect in the next expansion. This video was on the HD stream for those that purchased it.

Now if you read one of my past rants you will have read why I think that the changes to Ice mining are a GOOD THING. The new scanning system along with the Ice belts respawning every 4 hours after depletion is a GOOD thing for us hard working miners and a bad thing for bots :-)

Now for those folks out there that are saying that CCP has never done this before your wrong. I will take you back to 2006...

I generally don't announce roleplayed news on the forums, but there are times when attention needs to be drawn to them. Some ice fields
in high security, high traffic systems will deplete themselves over the
coming days, as they were not intended to be in these areas. There are
other fields that will suffer the same fate in the near future.

This
will have an impact on the ability of smaller corporations and more
advanced, new players to generate ISK, but this will also have a
(hopefully) major impact on some of the RMT strip mining operations in
high-sec space.

Due to caching, some of these depleted ice fields
will continue to appear in the client right-click menu. This will be
patched out in the near future, but it can also be resolved by clearing
your cache. Be warned, clearing your cache can have other effects on
your client, such as removing all sorting of bookmarks and other
personal settings.

kieron
Community Manager,
EVE Online

So you can see that was step one way back in the day...

I have also said several times in previous blogs that my corp GetCo have been Ice miners since Eve brought Ice to us as something we could interact with. We view these changes as a GOOD thing and so should you. Ice mining is a way to obtain necessary and useful things from our Eve sandbox. Without mining, POS life and capital ship battles as we know it would not be possible.
Too many of the things we must have come from the Ice belts. Isotopes and Liquid Ozone are particularly high on the list. The list goes on....Sam McGrawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469766007187873633noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561276700143589744.post-91274486111195578812013-05-04T18:47:00.000-07:002013-05-04T18:47:30.365-07:00Who's this CSM member? He said that he would be watching CCP closely while he is a CSM member. Actually, as Chicken little SHOULD say: “The Sky is falling, the sky is falling”

For those that do not understand here is a link to the reference.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sky_is_Falling

To help the reader along that is not in GetCo and not in our current alliance I will let you know that GetCo offers everyone an "Ice Purchasing Scheme" for their benefit. We pay our members Jita Market prices without having to take all of their products to Jita to sell them. Saves them a lot of time and money in all of the logistics involved with it.

That being said, GetCo was also at this years fanfest. GetCo also spent a lot of time talking with many CCP developers, some of the CSM 7 & 8 members in great depth about the new Ice Mining changes.

Why did/do we do this?

Because we knew that everyone would go into “panic mode” on wide “market speculations". We wanted to make sure that we fully understood what this means to you, how much ISK you can make, and what the REAL bottom lines are. So, in no particular order I will address the things that we see in GetCo as being the GOOD benefits of these changes.

1) Ice Mining will be twice as fast. This means that you will be able to mine more in the same amount of time then you were before. Bottom line with this? You make more ISK per hour. In the simplest terms. YOU MAKE MORE ISK PER HOUR! THIS IS A GOOD THING!

2) The belt respawns after being depleted. SO WHAT!!! Ore belts already do this. The difference with the Ore belts is that once they are depleted they do not respawn till after downtime. The ice belts will do it after four hours. THIS IS ALSO A GOOD THING!

3) The changes they did to the ice mining system by moving it from the static belt to the new scanner system is that it will make it more difficult for ice botters to mine their ice. The changes that they will do will make it easier for CCP to track and then ban them. THIS IS ALSO A GOOD THING!

4) Ice prices will go up right now and then as everyone figures this out they will go back down to where they were before all this panic started. There is no need to panic and if you want to cash in on all the crazy speculation then be all means be our guest. We will not be taking part in all the shenanigans.

So for those that were TL:DR

GetCo will most likely start the operations again for all of you on July 5th. That is when we believe that the markets and the silly speculators will have finished with their silly willy ways.
…and before you say “but how can you be sure of all of this”?

GetCo has been mining ICE since ICE was introduced into Eve online. It is what we do. Between what we know and when we spoke to CCP Developer Dr. Eyjólfur G. (EVE's chief economist) he confirmed it. You can see ROCK MELTER asking him (and the CSM members) questions to that and other questions on the recorded fanfest streams.
Sam McGrawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469766007187873633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561276700143589744.post-64083660008773661032013-04-17T10:15:00.000-07:002013-04-17T10:15:03.330-07:00Missile changes REV 3

ok, time for a different direction for a rant today. This is a topic that my corp GetCo and I will have once every quarter it seems. We always start talking about it and by the end of it we are all somewhat mad at how things have progresses on this topic. If I get positive feedback on this rant it will become a regular feature.

So what made me decide to write about it today? Well I was over at Poetic Stanziel reading the latest blog and nodding as I was reading it. Usually do when I am reading over there. You should follow them if your into that internet spaceship reading and stuff. Anyways, here is the snippet that really caught my attention.

<span style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">It
has annoyed me to no end that CCP has refused to release the voting
numbers on a day-by-day basis, as they did last year. I'm not sure what
the fuck CCP's problem is with releasing information like this, but
every year they get more secretive and stingy with information they used
to be free with.

Remember when they used to release their
quarterly reports? And then they stopped? Remember when they used to
tell us subscriber numbers, and now when they tell us, it includes
China. Now it's the voting numbers that are sekrit importunt numbers,
and all we get are coy and frustrating remarks from CSM reps who have
seen the numbers (and hint that they're promising.) I would be surprised
if CCP gave us the percentage of voters to subscribers this year, because that does tell us subscription numbers.

And
CCP Dolan is downright frustrating as well. For a dude that is managing
the CSM project, a player-represented project, he should be more
available to players via Twitter and the forums. If the dude is being
given a community representative job, then he should make himself
available to the community to answer questions. He did a fucking great
interview with Xander, don't get me wrong, and he seems like a nice guy,
but beyond that he's been the invisible man.

So at least you know what got me on today's path :-p

CCP being more secretive with the numbers is something that the CSM should address and get us a solid answer on.

Quarterly reports are something that my corp would have light meetings on. What to plan for the next quarter, what we all see as the trends. It needs to be back more often.

CSM being cryptic is something that we need to get them to stop doing NOW.

I bet your right. We will only get the percentage of voters and not the actual numbers.

CCP Dolan as the community representative makes as much sense to me as CCP Unifex leaving to go to the mobile decision. I just don't think either one of those decisions were very well thought out.So those are my thoughts on what they wrote. What about our thoughts over here at GetCo? Well I'm glad you asked!

Because this is going back to what they game used to be like in 2005! Behold the "COLD WAR" edition!

That is when they first seriously nerved the Raven. They promised way
back then that they would be tweaking it later. This is 8 years later!
Damn CCP! This is where they did their first serious nerfs to the missile system. Here is how they put it:

Missile Warfare: Faster flight times, target-velocity to
payload-ratio-damage-output factoring, introduction of new skills to
specialize in missile usage proficiency

This totally took the Caldari battleships out of the PvP arena and you have never seen a Raven in PvP since. They continue to use today's ideas and mechanics on the Future's missile designs. I am telling you CCP has no idea how missiles work in real life or in Eve. That was Rev 1.

Their second attempt and tackling this problem and nerfing it ever more was obvious to us when they tried to pass it off as a fix - buff. [Winter] Missile Rebalance 2.0 2012.09.18 Google doc with numbers for the affected missiles. This also was a very poor attempt at fixing the root problem. To the best of my eve notes, docs, pdfs and everything I have created over the years this is still not even close to where the game used to be EVEN after including the new cruise missile changes in Rev 3. I know this for a fact since I use to run the old school plexes in Pure Blind in a Raven when I ran the NEC Alliance.

ROCK MELTER, you done and gone hit your head on dem rocks your a melting one to many times. I have not read ANY dev blog on any cruise missile changes.

What the hell am I talking about? WHAT THE HELL AM I RANTING ABOUT?!?!?

It is not in a dev blog. It is in the official forums. You will have to be logged in but you can read all about the changes here. Go ahead! I'll wait, need to refresh my drink anyways...

Yes, NOT in a Dev Blog. How nice. How quaint. We have already discussed in the past how less then 20% of the people that play eve read the forums. So lets post some game information that people might find useful where 80% of the people don't know it exists. Brilliant!

You know, CCP wants us to write about the last 10 years of the game. I don't think they understand what they are asking here. Today's post is just one of at LEAST a hundred that I can talk about on how CCP keeps micro managing the game, breaking it and then taking in this case 8 years to try to address the problem. Do they really know what they just asked me to do? I seriously doubt it, but now that the genie is out there will be more blogs like today's. I can't wait to see how this pans out with the CSM or even if it gets mentioned.

<As ROCK MELTER walks away shaking his head he can be heard mumbling something about wanting his Mission Raven back>
Sam McGrawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469766007187873633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561276700143589744.post-31999053745830200822013-04-13T18:41:00.000-07:002013-04-13T18:41:03.769-07:00Executive Producer for the second decade of EVE OnlineOK, time for a prediction!

In today's Dev blog we hear about CCP Unifex leaving the position of Executive Producer and heading to the mobile division. This does not sound like a promotion to me but what the hell do I know? I'm a miner! So on with the facts that I do know.

The following are CCP Unifex CSM Winter Summit notes starting on page 3. Happy James315? I am quoting things just like you are now. Not to bad for the care bear miner you want to kill right?

"It wasn't until Exodus that Unifex personally felt “we really had a game” but that it was still a game that appealed to hardcore players who could look past the flaws to enjoy the experience. In fact, the hardcore will always look past flaws. Despite that, “we're a different company these days”, one that Unifex describes as finally in a place where they can build to a vision, essentially building the game “the way it should be, not the way circumstances forced it to be”. Pulling this off has required some shifts in focus and procedure, Unifex explained, adding that they're taking the time to write a new roadmap for helping them build EVE through the next decade."

"There are some things that I hope never change in EVE – It is a dark game; it is a game of consequences; it is a game of tough choices and social interaction. It is a game of pain; it is a game of joy; it is a game of extreme emotions. I would never change EVE from that. But that doesn't mean that it has to have a spreadsheet UI, it doesn’t mean that EVE has to be what it's been the last 10 years. There are certain things that we need to maintain what EVE needs to be, and if we were to all sit down I think we would find ourselves in violent agreement about what they are."

"If we don't have a goal, if we don't have something that is aspirational, there are competitors out there that are going to challenge us. There are players who will say, ‘you know what? You're no longer shooting for the stars’. One of the things that has become clear to me throughout Crucible, Inferno, and Retribution, is that it’s not the way we have done our best expansions."

Now we will switch over the the transcription of the PAX video where he was ranting from the heart and off script. What is the PAX Video you talk about?

Well Jester was on the ball on this one and here is a quote from his blog that gives credit where credit is due.

"So, sirunidan was on-the-ball enough to take pictures of the display
screen at PAX East during CCP Unifex's presentation on what we can
expect from Odyssey. Here's the first six pages. Here's the second six.

Now that you have caught up on the past news I want to center on a few things that BUST CCP Unifex on what he said in the CSM Minutes.

If you go to the 2 minute mark in the video he says:

"eve is not supposed to be a about a place of equilibrium it about people fighting other things"

and at the 5:30 mark he says:

"we don't want to be where we are right now, we want to make a step change".

Then there is another PAX East video you can watch that has some good info at the 5 minute mark. CCP Unifex says:

"How do we change the resource balance across the world? ...we want to cause ripples..."

So there is more proof if people were looking for it. More proof is always better :-)

Final quote, an oldie but a goodie.

So what does this tell you ROCK MELTER?

Here are my thoughts along with my prediction.

First, CCP Seagull is being fully supported by CCP's shareholders on her current tasks as head of product development. Since the summer of rage CCP has learned that if they screw ip it can cost them dearly. This is why they had the layoffs, this is why we have had cut backs in the game and this is something that CCP wants to avoid at all costs.

Second, CCP Can not be subjective. He says in the Retribution was not a good expansion but in the videos he does. He is just like CCP Soundwave in that regard and can never stay on script. There are more but I digress.

Third, he has not done a good job as Executive Producer. From what I understand about corporate life at CCP this is a normal thing for them. You do a job one year, you move to another job the next year, life goes on, have another beer. I do not see it like that. Mobile division? Even with Crest API coming out this is still a demotion.

Fourth, he mentions a little here and a little there that there are going to be changes. Specifically that the next 10 years will be different.

Prediction:

Alliance will run from the bottom up model The days of the GSW State of the Goonion message are going to be limited at first and eventually in a perfect world destroyed.

Moon mining REV2. It worked for POS's right? There are several theories on how this will work. Final implementation will be seen in Odyssey.

Local destabilized in Null to work the same way as the current wormhole mechanic

Finally new corporation UI that will allow all of us Enablers and Instigators that CCP Seagull loves to help CCP make this game that much more of a hook for those that have not played it yet.

I have said it before and I will say it again. I am a LURKER! I am also an enabler and instigator. That is the one group that she needs to understand better :-)

Time for another rant. This weekend is proving to be a good one for them. Fasten your seat belt because this one comes from James315. You can read the 3 page post over at TMC but you will most likely get bored with the same old same old from him. It was the end of page 3 that caught my attention.

It's true that emergent gameplay is created by the few, not the many.
And there will always be more carebears than risk creators, because as
easy as critics say piñata-bursting is, it's far easier to PvE. However,
EVE does not exist primarily for the purpose of allowing people to mine
and run missions in highsec. In my humble opinion, PvE is merely a
facilitator for the more interesting and unique aspects of the game.
This is still the case if carebears flock to the game and push PvP'ers
into the minority. As the PvE-only population grows, that opinion be
increasingly elitist and politically incorrect, but not less true.
James 315
MinerBumping.com

So lets cover this point by point:

It's true that emergent gameplay is created by the few, not the many. This is 100% true James. What you have always failed to realize is that you are not in the emergent game play division. You sir are 100% griefer

There will always be more carebears than risk creatorsThis is also 100% true James! There have always been more care bears in Eve and there always will be. They are the #1 subscription base in Eve Online and where CCP makes their money.

PvE is merely a
facilitator for the more interesting and unique aspects of the game.Again, your 100% right! PvE weather it is mining, mission running, exploration or industry is what makes up the bulk of what people do in Eve Online. Very interesting indeed!

This is still the case if carebears flock to the game and push PvP'ers
into the minority.Ahh, you got this one wrong though James. PvPer's have never been in the majority. You show me a successful null sec alliance and I will show you a group of people that either have a ton of their own alts working back in Empire to support their needs or a ton of renter corps that are doing the same High sec stuff they need. The PvE'ers have ALWAYS been the dominant force in Eve and now that CCP Seagull is tasked with getting eve subscriptions up you can guarantee what you said next is going to happen.

As the PvE-only population grows, that opinion be
increasingly elitist and politically incorrect, but not less true. The PvE population has already been there since the beginning of the game James. I should know, I have been there with them. Watching all of your PvP'ers go around stomping your feet always making a ruckus. You complain on the official Eve forums. You complain on your own forums. You make taken to creating websites like yours and blogging to whomever will listen to get your message out there.

The truth behind it James is that your are the minority. Your the 20% the reads the forums, blogs, writes for himself, your website and even TMC. You have never been the voice for people out there and you will never be.

SAY IT ISN'T SO ROCK MELTER!!!!

Not only is that the truth, I am and always have been in the 80% group of PvE'rs. We are the bread and butter of what makes CCP's game work. So much so that as you always like to quote "If you read the CSM Minutes"...blah blah blah you see that CCP is now seriously looking at ways of increasing those numbers. I mean lets get real here ok? After the Summer of Rage scared the hell of our CCP who could blame them right?

So in the end of this blog your improving James315! Your at a 60% approval rate with the ol' ROCK MELTER here. I wouldn't let you join my corp but there is still hope for you in the future :-)
Sam McGrawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469766007187873633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561276700143589744.post-74533896761536082172013-04-13T12:03:00.001-07:002013-04-14T14:46:37.092-07:00How does Eve Traffic Control Work? Part 1

During peak travel times in Jita, there are about 5,000 pilots
in the system every hour. This translates to approximately 100,000 ships jumping in and out of that system each day. How do these ships keep from
colliding with each other? How does gate traffic move into and out of an system or across the region? These are questions GetCo has sought the answers to ever since Concord lost control of everything when their station was destroyed in Yulai.

The
task of ensuring safe operations of commercial and private ships
falls on concord controllers. They must coordinate the movements of
thousands of ships, keep them at safe distances from each other,
direct them during decloaking and landing from gates, direct them around
bad nodes and ensure that traffic flows smoothly with minimal delays.

When
you think about Concord traffic control, the image of men and women in the control room of an gate probably comes to mind. However, the Concord gate traffic
control system is much more complex than that. In this article, we will
examine air traffic control in the Yulai system in the region of Genesis. Since GetCo has an office in this station and we were there when they were attacked we decided to do a study on this to learn what Concord would not tell us. We'll follow a ship
from departure to arrival, looking at the various controllers involved,
what each one does, the equipment they use and how they are trained.

Empire High Security Space Traffic Control

Concord High Sec space is divided into 22 zones (regions),
and each zone is divided into many different systems. Also within each zone are
portions of space, about 5000 miles (8046.72 km) in diameter, called TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach CONtrol) spaces. Within each TRACON space are a number of control towers just like the one in Yulai, each
of which has its own space with a 50-mile (80-km) radius.

The traffic control system, which is run by CONCORD, has been designed around these space divisions. The traffic control system divisions are:

Space Traffic Control System Command Center (STCSCC) - The STCSCC
oversees all traffic control. It also manages traffic control
within centers where there are problems (solar storms, traffic overloads, Sansha Incursions).

Space route traffic control centers (SRTCC) - There is one SRTCC
for each center. Each SRTCC manages traffic within all sectors of its
center except for TRACON space and local gate space.

Terminal radar approach control - TRACON handles departing and approaching spacecraft within its space.

Space traffic control tower (STCT) - An STCT is located at every spaceport that has regularly scheduled flights. Towers handle all docking, undocking, and ground traffic thanks to all of the DUST 514 mercs.

Flight service station (FSS) - The FSS
provides information (weather, route, terrain, flight plan) for private
pilots flying into and out of small spaceports and rural areas. It
assists pilots in emergencies and coordinates search-and-rescue
operations for missing or overdue spacecraft.

The movement of spacecraft through the various space divisions is much like players moving through a "zone" defense that a basketball
or football team might use. As an aircraft travels through a given space division, it is monitored by the one or more space traffic
controllers responsible for that division. The controllers monitor this spacecraft and give instructions to the pilot. As the spacecraft leaves that space division and enters another, the space traffic controller passes
it off to the controllers responsible for the new space division.

Some pilots, Mercs mostly, of small aircraft fly by vision only (visual flight rules,
or VFR). These pilots are not required by the Concord to file flight plans
and, except for FSS and local towers, are not serviced by the mainstream space traffic control system. Pilots of large commercial flights use
instruments to fly (instrument flight rules, or IFR),
so they can fly in all sorts of weather. They must file flight plans and
are serviced by the mainstream air traffic control system. Your normal capsuleer does not have to deal with these problems so far.

We have explained what we have learned so far from the current system In the next post in this series we will discuss what we have learned and explain what they all means since the dawn of the Empyrean Age.Sam McGrawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469766007187873633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561276700143589744.post-35974555785831955712013-04-13T11:19:00.000-07:002013-04-14T14:35:03.340-07:00Bedrock principles - Oil & Water - Eve OnlineOK, time for another rant, this one took me by surprise! The next quote comes from our very own Jester and I could not disagree with him more!

I've received the following statement or question five times now during
my CSM run, and I thought it would be useful to make public what is
becoming my standard answer to the question.

Here's the statement netted down to its basic form:

Scamming should be against the EULA. Don't you think so, Jester?

Here's what is becoming my standard response:

You are directly attacking one of the bedrock principles that EVE rests
on. EVE is a sandbox controlled by player actions with the barest
minimum action against players taken by CCP. It is quite literally laissez-faire capitalism taken to the farthest extreme. In a very real way, that principle is what a lot of EVE players play EVE for: it is not
Star Trek, where humanity is a many times nicer version of itself.
Instead, it is a world built without warning labels or consumer
protection bureaus where you have to watch out for yourself. Stealing
from people is a valid tactic within the game. Hell, CCP wrote a whole
trailer video about it promoting this style of game-play.

In EVE, wherever possible, in-game problems are solved by the players, not the devs.

If
scamming bothers you that much, why not start a searchable database of
scammers that EVE players can reference, add to, and comment on? Then
as it becomes a popular service, add in-game or RL advertising and make a
few ISK/dollars for yourself? That is the sort of player-driven
solution that compliments how EVE is built. This is how an EVE player
solves an in-game problem, not another set of rules that CCP has to
enforce.

It's a pretty harsh answer, but "harsh" is what EVE is about. Sorry I can't give you an answer you like better...

Might lose me a few votes, but that's what I believe on this topic. Here's the trailer that I reference in the response:

Now my response.

First off, the first and second sentence are at odds with each other. Eve will never have any bedrock principals BECAUSE it is a SANDBOX!

"Harsh" is what Eve is all about. Very interesting statement there. Again, if this is a true sandbox and you want to run for the CSM, maybe even be the Chairperson for the CSM then perhaps sir you should STOP telling me how to play in my OWN SANDBOX! LISTEN to all of the player base and not what YOU perceive to be what the eve universe is!

Let me give you another example from your own blog.

Focus: CSM Summit Minutes, "Null-sec" sessions

Let's start with the most famous quote in these two sections, shall we?

On top of that, Soundwave added, the POS system by itself would only affect a small portion of the community.

Now, I've already mentioned this quote in another blog post and pointed to both Two step's blog post about it and his growing threadnaught.
It's up to 121 pages, and I'm told that CCP is counting the number of
unique player accounts that reply to that thread. So if you've been
thinking about posting in there but think your contribution doesn't
matter or enough players have already spoken up about it, I'd encourage
you to revisit that thought process.

So was Two Step wrong when he went public with this and not stay quite like Selene and the rest of CSM wanted him to? or do you think he really did the right thing? or is that not a fair question to ask now?

So I say this to you Jester. You have been asked so far 6 times now, since I am including myself in this blog "Scamming should be against the EULA. Don't you think so, Jester?". That would statistically show you the same thing? That maybe you should not be so set in what you think Eve is and work more on what we ALL LIKE about eve.

If I am ever to have a quote in Eve it will be this:

"Eve Online does not have any Bedrock Principles as that contridicts the very nature of how the sandbox design was created". - ROCK MELTERSam McGrawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469766007187873633noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561276700143589744.post-82812295215559573882013-04-13T07:40:00.001-07:002013-04-13T07:40:26.772-07:00Eve Online's Carebears...There is a good post over at Mabrick's Mumblings that is in sync with today's rant. I also read the article by Ali Aras over at TMC and have to take issue with several of her points. Let me start out with a few famous quotes to set the stage.

“Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it.”
― Leo Tolstoy, A Confession

“Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.”
― Augustine of Hippo

“If you are afraid of being lonely, don't try to be right.”
― Jules Renard

“If you boil it down, just because someone else does the wrong thing we are not exempt from doing what’s right.”
― E.A. Bucchianeri

First I will tackle Mabrick's post. AMEN BROTHER! You hit the nail right on the head! I could not have put it any better myself. Here is the problem though. You have massive groups of people like Goonswarm (aren't they just so evil) that will do what you said each and every time. They think that their way of playing should be forced on everyone and if you disagree with that you will suffer the wrath of Mittens. Sigh.

Then you have the new fresh look from Ali Aras who is running for CSM and wants to show everyont that she is on their side when it comes to the new players in eve. Her explanation is nothing more then a fallacy. What is a fallacy?

Fallacies are fake or deceptive arguments, arguments that prove nothing. Fallacies often seem superficially sound, and far too often have immense persuasive power, even after being clearly exposed as false. Fallacies are not always deliberate, but a good scholar’s purpose is always to identify and unmask fallacies in arguments.

She talks about how the poor new player in Eve can not make any ISK but then goes right into telling you how much she can make and how successful she has become without once telling the reader how she went from NOOB to the ultra elitist status in Eve online.

I have news for you Ali, your whole blog is a fallacy. If the current system did not work we would not have the eve online that we do today. It kept me in the game, it kept you in the game, and we both learned what we wanted to learn though the process. So say it is broken now is just plain wrong.

Even Jester seems to be smitten with her which I find helps prove my point even better since he is usually prone to seeing these things. Want more proof? Here is one more quote off her post.

"She enjoys everything from solo/duo roaming to suicide ganking to
FCing 50-100 battleship fleets to ratting to running a small moongoo
reaction empire."

Now how do you start playing eve online and want to be the voice for new players in eve when you clearly show that your not a new player, maybe a GSW canidate? New players can not do what your doing! TROLL! Thoughts?

If you care about such things then I reckon that this covers even more then the 44 ships total that are listed. I have underlined the ones below that I find disturbing.

Shield:

Ibis, Taipan, Merlin, Worm, Harpy, Cambion, Moa, Gila,
Eagle, Onyx, Broadsword, Drake, Ferox, Nighthawk, Vulture, Tengu, Loki,
Skiff, Mackinaw, Hulk, Rokh, Scorpion Navy Issue, Rattlesnake, Chimera,

We just went through this CCP. Why do you always have to screw with the game. Let me jog your memories in case you forgot. Ship Balancing: Mining Barges 03.08.2012 18:10 By CCP Tallest

ok, so let me see. With the whole Tiericide initiative that has been going on the exhumers will be getting hit twice. Seem like James315 is getting his wish, easier miners to gank.

This is ridiculous change to the ships listed above and we all know a blanket nerf when we see one. The nerfing HICs makes them even worse to pilot, triage will worse, and everything else this will touch is completely opposite of anything I would have asked for. Even the Tech III fleets will be effected by this. I can not believe that CSM7 would of supported this and if they did then shame on them for not talking to the player base. If this is bothering you then get over to the forums and let the folks over there know. Let the CSM know too.

Special thanks to Xander Phoena over at Crossing Zebras for the endless HOURS of pod casts that I listed to. YOU sir made my life a lot easier in this process! So now that I have voted and passed along my thoughts on that process to my corporation GetCo I now get back to my rants. Yes, I have about a dozen drafts I am working on and now it is time to let them loose.

Rant number one for today starts with what I just read over at The Nosy Gamer. I will quote it here for your benefit but that is a blog you should subscribe to.

"The first subject involved the upcoming redistribution of resources
throughout New Eden. I'm not sure this will appear in the summer
expansion but I found the segment interesting nonetheless. CCP
Soundwave stated that he believed that the current sov mechanics were
just a small part of the problem with null sec. I think that some
people will get a shock from hearing what may about to descend on
players..."

CCP Soundwave - “We’re going to be tinkering around with
minerals. Personally I’d like to see some changes to ice, for example.
There’s a lot of interesting opportunities there. I think ice is very
underplayed as a very tactical resource. Like it should essentially be
the oil of Eve Online... It would be good if it was something that
people thought about instead of something you get from endless mining
barges in Empire that may or may not be piloted by people.”

CCP Solomon - “One of the key drivers for this work we’re
doing, and this come a lot from the CSM Summit, is people are looking
for resource contention and acquisition to involve more people. They
were concerned that it was too static and it was in the hands of the
few. And rather -- we don’t necessarily want to stop that -- but rather
encourage large-scale organizers to lobby more people in terms of
gathering and exploiting these resources and working the space. So just
systems have more of a feeling that they are busy and there’s activity
going on there. That’s very much been a driver when we’ve been looking
at this resource work and kind of the high-level goals we want to hit.”

CCP Soundwave in my opinion is ALWAYS looking for conflict drivers. He will never be happy with Eve Online unless every damn person is shooting the hell out of each other. If I had to single our one Eve Online Developer that does not understand that Eve Online is a Sandbox and that not everything has to be combat it would be him. Soundwave, this message is directly pointed at you. STAY THE HELL OUT OF MY SANDBOX!

Now if CCP Solomon is being honest here, I am going to have to take up a HUGE problem then with CSM7. I made bold and underlined what I seriously have a problem with in his statement above. CSM7, this message is the same one I just told CCP Soundwave, who are YOU to tell me how to play my game?!? I am 100% sure that neither my Alliance, Corporation or myself were consulted with you telling CCP that we are looking for more Resource Contention. Your brains freeze while in Iceland? I will put it another way for you. HELL NO!

It simply amazes me that the Null or Wormhole Alliances can think with such narrow focus. Add that to the limited visions of some of the developers like CCP Soundwave above and you then wonder why Eve Online continues to fail at getting the subscription numbers that CCP Seagull and CCP Unifex want? If you doubt what I am saying, read the CSM7 Winter Minutes, first section with them in it, "The Next Decade" and read it for yourself.

End thought: Lets make Eve Online harder for everyone. Lets make it more tedious. Lets make it more meta gaming. How about lets hope CSM8 gets it right and lets hope CCP Seagull can make CCP Soundwave HTFU and STFU at the same time. Comments below.

Suicide gankers - I hate them! But they are a play style that some people in Eve seem to enjoy. All I can see in my mind is the equivalent of today's suicide bombers that everyone hates and wonder how anyone could even want to resemble that!

Anyways! Since it is allowable in game and even with the threat of Concord killing them this doesn’t stop them from doing it. So we need consequences if they
do it.

I find his misdirection not only fascinating but also 100% see through. The elections will be fun to watch for sure :-)

ok, James315 starts out with this beauty.

"After the candidates are determined, I will provide some information
about them, to help everyone know which candidates have appropriate
views on highsec, and which candidates have more malignant tendencies."

That right there folks is what we call "a tell" since James will not be running for the CSM8 seat now. He actually dropped out before I thought he would :-( since I knew he was playing "the game" all along.

Then he comes out with this insightful one.

"MinerBumping is quintessential EVE. Not only does MinerBumping showcase proper, legitimate EVE play, it showcases ideal
EVE play, and provides a positive example for other players to follow.
Suicide ganking a fleet of Mackinaws and then posting the ridiculous,
tear-filled EVEmail sent by the mining ships' owner is absolutely in the
spirit of EVE. That's true whether the ganker is a player, a CSM
representative, the CSM Chairman, or an employee of CCP."

That statement shows you not only where his logic is flawed but also where he gets others to buy into his Rhetoric. It is amazing he has the following he has. Then there is this beauty!

"In the past, I have written at length on my concerns about the direction
of EVE. I speculated freely about the possibility that CCP would
introduce a series of nerfs to highsec aggression. As it turned out, my
speculation proved to be accurate. Ironically, had I been a member of
the CSM at the time, I probably would have had access to more
information to back up my claims--but I would have been prohibited from
writing on the subject."

Oh James, you are defiantly one of the reasons the Eve subscription numbers are so low! I am not putting the direct blame on you, Heavens no! Your just one of many people and reasons why CCP Seagull is working on trying to REVERSE this effect and find ways for MORE PEOPLE TO PLAY EVE! Your "concerns" are the same concerns that CCP now has. The part that you do not understand is that CCP wants more subscribers and you, dear James315 would take that away.

I also think that you even thought of this, so this is why you wrote this next.

"Before, I would have been guaranteed a seat at the table in Iceland,
receiving one of the top seven vote tallies (regardless of whether STV
was used). Now a new scenario presents itself, one in which CCP declines
to include me--based on my platform, reputation, attitude or
whatever--but in which I would still be under the NDA for a year or
more. If the CSM is increasingly viewed by CCP as obsolete, or if they
view it as a pool from which they pick and choose the useful candidates
and marginalize the rest, then I must adjust my cost-benefit analysis of
giving up my platform in order to take a seat on the CSM."

I agree with you on this, go figure right? :-) since it is a little of all of the above that would of kept you away. I believe this as much as you do. How about that! We can agree on something! :-)

So after reading all of this would you expect what he wrote next?

"Again, I return to the question I asked earlier: Does a (non-Iceland?)
seat on the CSM offer enough influence to justify going under the NDA,
as opposed to having someone else on the CSM who shares my views but
doesn't have a comparable platform to give up? At this point, to ask the
question is to answer it. Accordingly, I am withdrawing from the CSM8
race. Today was the last day to submit my application to CCP to include
my name on the ballot for the first round of voting. Instead of sending
my application in, I wrote this post."

WOW is all I can say. James315, I may not agree with you on 99% of what you say but at least you were saying something! There are not enough people in Eve that speak up. You fortunately are one of them. Because of people like you, people like me have come out to expose the things in Eve that make it the sandbox that we all want to enjoy. I wish you would of at least ran to see if "the game" would of let you become a CSM member. I would of bet that you would of made it.

Anyways, for those that say "TL DR" here is the summery.

James315 is out of the race. I'll blog on the others that will most likely fail to "the game" as well.
This will be the first of several blogs focusing on some of the things that we have mentioned in the "Features & Ideas Discussion" threads on the official forums.

There are several things we talk about in GetCo over the years that really make us scratch our heads and have to just ask why CCP does the things it does. At times we even hear some of the people in our alliance ask the same questions. Even when I talk to other alliances I hear some of the same questions over and over again. Funny (strange) that so many people would have the same viewpoints, thoughts and opinions on some of the basic problems that we see in Eve that are never addressed.

Problem identified

Regarding the research slots being full in stations, especially the ME and
COPY. CCP has always limited this. Why? What is the reason for making the "lurkers" of Eve that live in High Sec space (for the most part) lives so much harder?

Current answer

Players that create POS's (player owned structures) in low or null sec can avoid this problem (at a much greater cost) without having all the wait times or lack of slots.

GetCo's answer

If you really wanted to throw a curve into it, add faction standings as a
requirement. Say at least a +5 or +6 standing. It would be similar to placing a POS.

Additional bonus

That would cut out some alt's
doing research.

And another idea

Adjust the price of research of it based on standings. A +10 faction standings would be the cheapest prices since there shouldn’t be any NEGATIVE Concord security standing pilots doing
research in Empire at all.

Yet another idea

As a ISK sink, I think you should have additional options while renting a
office. Why not add rentable Research slots to the office options to your office
rent.

Final thoughts on this?

Let a +10 faction status mean something besides LP points. Makes the profession of doing this mean more and makes the players that do it have more worth while at the same time weeding out all of the bad apples.

Your thoughts?

Most people don't...With all of the CSM information out there I thought I would put in a few quotes for you from various websites that I want to comment on. If you have not read the blog before this one, now would be the time to review that before you go on.

RELEASE THE RANTS!!!
This is the first CSM election which has cropped up since
TheMittani.com has been active, so we have a question before us: do our
readers, uh, care?"

"Coverage could range from specific candidate interviews (which I
personally think are irrelevant and boring) to more high-level 'horse
race' features where we analyze who is likely to win, who has bloc-level
backing, and who are comedy candidates"

- by The_Mittani

I can take a shot at answering that for them. YES, your readers care (I am one of them at least that does) but I can tell you that all the other people out there that do not go to your website to read your posts DON'T.

Lets put this another way. You folks over at TMC know the numbers for your reading membership. Subtract that from the 500,000 reported Eve subscribers and I would care to guess that would be a fairly accurate number of people that DON'T care.

Throw into the mix that The Mittani does not feel that specific candidate interviews like the ones at Crossing Zebras count, then that number in fact may be even less then that. I think that as time goes on TMC is loosing touch with what the rest of Eve wants versus what they want. :-/

ok, on to the next interesting piece of internet Eve Online wisdom! This one come from Gevlon over at the Greedy Goblin and I find it to be what I would call pretty damn accurate.

"There is a common theme against the CSM platform of James 315 and the
balancing of EVE economy at large: many people are high sec casual
players, a new player will very likely start as a high sec casual and
nerfing high sec would make them quit, ruining CCP."

and

"So a high sec casual can fully play his chosen game if he has a couple ten million ISK income per month.
Even if his level of income doesn't allow him to buy a battleship or T3
in a year, it doesn't hurt his fun, just like it doesn't hurt the fun
of lvl4 missioners that he can't earn for a titan or even fly it in
high sec if he PLEX's one."

Here are 2 more interesting quotes. Lets tackle the first one...

How do you get to know the casual high sec player? They are not one of the people that read any of our blogs or forums if they have just started out in Eve. In some of the cases they have not even joined up with a corporation yet that they can call home. They are unguided, confused and don't quite know where they want to go or do yet. Nerfing High Sec is not a bad or good thing as a new player has no reference what it "should" be like.

How do they get to know what it "should" be like? Through others of course. Who are those others? People like James 315? People like you? People like me? In what ever case you choose it can be thed players and it SHOULD be the players and not CCP in my humble opinion. I may not agree with James on his points but I do like the fact that he is taking an active part in trying to do SOMETHING.

I heard once before "if your not part of the solution you are part of the problem". Get your readers to buy into what your selling and who knows, maybe James will be on CSM.

On to the second quote...

These people that are not the readers are the people that play Eve for Fun. They are the gamers. Gamers play for fun. We, you and I and all the other bloggers, writers, pod casters, enablers, instigators and even the lurkers are the "hobbyists" of Eve.

Again, 2 different (or more) groups of Eve players. Only a small portion are our readers. How do we increase that? Well, we HAVE to learn about our readers. How do we do that? Good question.

Which brings me to the end of this blog since I could give you at least a dozen more examples but I don't want to bore you, only get you thinking.

I think that it is the CSM's job to work on this problem. How do THEY get more readers not only for themselves but for CSM and for CCP. If they can tackle that problem they don't need CCP's permission to do it. They only need the desire to do do it and then bring that increased reader base to the game with all of us as a voice with them being the tool to make it happen.

Make sense?

It does to me. ok, enough of this rant, more to write about in another blog.Sam McGrawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15469766007187873633noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3561276700143589744.post-40250171397810561262013-03-17T08:59:00.000-07:002013-03-17T09:44:48.986-07:00You’ve just lost "The Game"...

Each week I may post a few times about what I see in the Eve community, its Bloggers, Pod Casters and even CCP's Developers. With all of the current focus on the CSM elections I wanted to share how I look at some of the meta gaming that is going on inside.

I decided that I am not going to point any fingers in this particular blog so you can see what I am trying to say on your own. This is a fun and scary way to look at Eve Online. If you don't want to change your way of viewing the game then stop reading now.

About

The
Game is one of the simplest distortions of game logic ever invented; by
which simply thinking about The Game causes one to lose.

Due to
the futility and inevitable loss, The Game could be viewed as a
statement of the human condition; that is to say, humankind’s struggle
against fundamental laws of nature. THE GAME results in a double negative scenario where trying to not do something is the catalyst for said event.

Origins

THE GAME was invented in 1977 by members of the Cambridge University Science Fiction Society (CUSFS) who would regularly meet at the Horse and Groom pub (Kings Street, Cambridge, UK) to drink and discuss game theory.
From losethegame.com

The members of CUSFS
assert that the creation of The Game was a collective effort, but Nigel
Goldenfeld and Mark Haslett were probably the most responsible for
releasing it into the public. The CUSFS 1977 collective includes:

Dr Nigel Goldenfeld – “What’s scary about all this is that it took so long for it to take over the world.”

Mark Haslett – “We did not realise what a viral concept it was and I continue to lose from time to time now 30 years on.”

Philip Brice – “The idea developed of a game in which you didn’t know you were competing in until you weren’t.”

Dr Nick Lowe – “Our meetings are still punctuated, and often opened, with the words ‘Gah! I lose.’”

Dr Richard Pinch

Online Apperance

The first known appearance of THE GAME online was on Paul Taylor of West Midland’s blog in 2002.

A major contributing factor to this meme’s virability is the simplicity of its execution. Simply saying “THE GAME”
instantly causes everyone within earshot to lose. Whether they are
aware that they are playing or not, they have now thought about The
Game. Similar behaviour can be observed in a multitude of scenarios
because there is always that one person out there who enjoys screwing
with other’s minds.

Other Responses

A niche execution of THE GAME
has come into being in the form of non sequiturers. Essentially a story
will be posted where the only goal will be to capture the reader’s
attention. At the end of the story however, the true goal is revealed
Example:

You will never believe what happened to me this morning! I was waking
up and doing my morning routine, eat breakfast, take a shower, brush my
teeth, that sort of thing. When I was about to get changed, I saw
something in my window that looked a little strange. I went to look and
there he was, a man was staring through my window on a ladder!

Just
as soon as he knew I saw him he started climbing down the ladder and I
ran for the door outside. On my way out I grabbed the bat I keep under
my bed. When I got outside I saw him running down my block and I began
chasing after him. We ran for nearly 10 minutes and reached some woods.
Then from there we ran another 15 until I lost sight of him.

Lost, in the middle of the woods, chasing a peeping Tom. I knew something like this could only happen to me.

The
search seemed over when a bit deeper in the woods I heard the man
scream. I ran out there and saw him sitting on the ground a good
distance away from me. As I got closer I could see he had gotten his
foot stuck in a bear trap! Actually I’m not so sure it was a bear trap
because it was a bit smaller but you get the point. I walked up to him
with my bat and said the sweetest one liner I could think up on the

Here are what I consider a few of this weeks highlights.

First we start off with the blog This is how Eve dies, with a whimper by Rixx Javix on Mar 4, 2013. He states the following:

"People are arguing over consensual and non-consensual PvP in every area
of Eve. Including high-sec for goodness sake. I've got news for those
engaging in such mealy mouthed debates, you are not expressing a viable
opinion - you are feeding the beast of apathy. There is NO debate
between consensual and non-consensual PvP! You log into Eve and you are
agreeing to participate. Simple. You want to avoid PvP? Don't play."

My answer to this is is very simple. Eve has been this way since the very beginning of it. Nothing has changed at all. People don't log onto eve just to PvP. I have been playing since beta, I have multiple accounts and last I knew Eve was a sandbox.

If you want to check the following websites for statistics here are a few:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eve_Online

http://eve-offline.net/

Ten people explode every minute in Eve Online. 604 people explode every
hour. 14,502 people explode every day. In total, more than 21 million
people have exploded at the hands of NPCs and other players since CCP
added the kill report system on December 5, 2007.

A weekend of epic destruction in eve online Feel free to use Google to find more :-)

Final thought on this blog? Stop creating another "is Eve dying" post and stop telling people how to play the game! I think this is the best time to EVER play Eve!

EVE Stratics has an interview from CSM8 candidates Malcanis, Marc Scaurus, Trebor Daehdoow, and Nathan Jameson. If your into anything about the elections there is some information there. You decide if it is important to you.

Jester has a quote that I is worth posting about. It is a good blog if you have the time to read it. I quoted a few parts of it to comment on.

"The most egregious problem with mining in general and ice-mining in
particular is how unengaging it is. Trust me, if I do get to Iceland
it's something that's going to come up -- I don't care if CCP already
knows"

and one more quote from that post:

"Having been in mining ops myself, I can tell you the only bearable way
to do it is to make it a social activity, and that's what I recommend
here"

and

"The simplest way to make yourself a hard target and deflect gankers onto
the other guy is with cooperative tactics. As long as you can find
people you trust and can share the overall output of a mining op,
there's no reason why you can't (and shouldn't) support your mining op
with a few support ships. The best first ship to add is a Scythe."
and then later he talks about a Scorpion as well. Here are my thoughts and rants...

First, some of us LIKE the fact that Ice Mining is unengaging. It allows us to play eve while AFK or even blogging. Here is a screen shot of with Eve on my left screen and blogging on the right screen.

CCP developed this type of game play because it also fits a needs of player base in the game. The "lurker" class in Eve. Not exclusively as you mentioned in your article. How do I know this? Well ALL of the people in my corporation play the game this way. MOST of the people in our Alliance that mine also play the game this way. We are not the largest Corp or Alliance by any means BUT we are also not just a few people here and there.

In other words Jester, there are just as many of us are there are as many of "you" and another difference is that the Lurkers stay quite and just play the game since that is what they are content with. They do not feel the game is broken in this aspect at all. I can go into greater detail in this if anyone wishes but that will be in a different blog.

ok, on to the next quote from Jester, he says that the only way to make mining bearable is to make it social. Here I have to disagree again. I can quote THIS website to show you a real world example of way his quote is off center. Go take a look at the website and when you return I'll be waiting. Click HERE if you want listening music :-)

WB (welcome back)

I think that this show, Gold Rush, helps illustrate my point fairly well. There is one 3 person team on that show that reminds me somewhat of my own corporation GetCo. The other "teams" in that show to me represent the other corporations that I also know that make up our alliance.

Starting to see MY viewpoint yet?

Even though there are a lot of people in this show, they all operate in their own little groups and work at how to obtain what they want, which in this case is Gold. In Eve, for us, and for this example, is Ice.

Now if you want to go back in history a little bit we can look at the California Gold Rush and see that it is the same then as it is now. It attracted the miners even though they knew it was not going to be easy and that they could even possibly die from. This is what changed their lives back then.

and this is what has done it for Eve Online now. All one has to do is look at "The Big Picture" to see the similarities. A good solo miner can make good ISK with multiple accounts. Get several people together to mine together and you don't increase those profits. You SPLIT them. So seeing hundreds of miners mining together is never going to happen. Seeing small groups like you do now is how it will always remain. Make sense?

4. Finally this week we finish up with what I would consider a very good article with insight over at Merchant Monarchy that tells everyone "Eve is not a PvP Game" and my favorite quote out of that blog is:

"The vast majority of Eve players who call themselves PvPers are really
nothing more than risk averse gank farmers and bullies preying on the
weak"

I have often thought along those lines about a good portion of the griefers and gankers that us miners have to deal with. It is good to see someone else at least putting in writing how they feel. Now what is going to be done about it?

I printed them out, made comments all through the document and waited to see what other Eve players had to comment about it. Now that they have had their time in the limelight it is time to give this bitter vet's view...

Eve Online - The Next Decade

I am going to make a bulleted lists of the things that I found of interest in this section. Then comment on them afterwards.

CCP Unifex states the following and it is not taken out of context.

1. "the hardcore will always look past the flaws"

2. "it is a game of social interaction"

3. "there are competitors out there that are going to challenge us"

CCP Seagull states the following and it is not taken out of context.

4. "looking at each player group being served"

5. "Instigators & Enablers"

6. "What is this Lurker? They constitute a lot of our accounts"

All of the current CSM7 members commented on their thoughts on what was said by these 2 developers in this section of the minutes. For the most part I agree with them. Mostly. Now onward to ROCK's ranks about this...

First, I disagree with the statement 1. Are you kidding me?! There are features that were the selling point of this game brought up over a decade ago that are still not in the game! Want a list?

Interbus - Where is it? It was supposed to be in the game during BETA and has yet to be instituted. Interbus was going to be the NPC freight mover in the game. You buy something in game and they would ship it to where ever you wanted it to go. For a fee of course.

Ghost training - IT WAS A FEATURE! They advertised the game with this FEATURE that they took out in pursuit of more MONEY!

Bounty hunting - Yes, it WAS a skill book! There were many other skill books that were removed from the game in the early days. Thoughts of the bounty system were way back in BETA and failed all the way to recently. The skill increased the bounties you received.

Another skill book was DED Connections which also disappeared about that time period.

The Black market skill book has been unavailable since they changed the start to 800k skill points. I had that skill trained on a couple of my first accounts.

Now on to statement 2. Eve is a game of "social interaction". Yes it is, but it is ALSO a sandbox.

Most of my corporation "GetCo's" members are SINGLE players. They log onto Eve and do lots of things by themselves. There can be ten of us online for 4 hours on a Saturday or Sunday at the same time and other then saying hello and goodby to people as then come and go there is hardly any corp chat. Yes, we use voice coms a lot to talk to each other but we are not interacting WITH each other in game. Now don't get me wrong, we also mine together, A LOT! but lest say for arguments sake that it is a 50/50 split. I log onto Eve to unwind and relax. If I do it solo I am fine with that. I do not need others to make this game enjoyable for myself.

Statement 3 is a good one. There is the new Planetside that people are looking into but I have already subscribed to Star Citizen. Why you might ask? It will be another space MMO and of course I will be in the BETA in that and work from there on it. A lot of the features that were in the game I played before Eve (Earth & Beyond) have made it into Eve. So I expect to see some of Eve in Star Citizen and if Star Citizen takes off expect some of what makes that game special come into Eve.

Statement 4 is also a interesting statement. "looking at each player group being served". With CCP also stating that new releases were going to be in a different format it will be curious how they intend to pull this off. They have never been good at this in the past. Lets see if Seagull can pull it off. My ISK is on the simple fact of "not in a million years". When you have players that form groups that make the largest alliance in the game on the CSM, there is NOT going to be a CCP and CSM agreement on this. Stay tuned for lots of finger pointing with CSM8.

Ah, statement 5. The "Instigators & Enablers" idea. Now THIS is something that sparked my interest. As the CEO of my corp and a past alliance leader of the NEC I found this to be VERY interesting. Since I am both a "Instigator & Enabler" for everything I do in Eve online I spend a lot of time OUTSIDE of the game planning things for everyone to do. Then I had these things off to my directors OUTSIDE of the game via real world emails and then log into game to do my own things. So the "social" aspect for me in game does not exist since I spend a majority of my time OUTSIDE the game setting it up for others.

Now is also a good time to add the answer that was one of Crossing Zebras questions for the CSM candidates. Can I give the 20 or more hours a week to the CSM if elected to do the job to the best of my ability? You bet I can! I have spoken over this with my family and they fully support me on this. I am going to Fanfest this year to start getting the feel for everything, take lots of notes and start to do all the networking that will be required to be a very good CSM member.

Next, statement 6. "What is this Lurker? They constitute a lot of our accounts". This is something that the current CSM could not answer at all. They didn't even try! CCP Seagull did not even go into detail on what she thought this was. Well folks, I'll let you in on the big secret that no one wants to talk about. No one wants you to know about it either. Who are the lurkers?!?

The "bitter vets" like myself ARE the LURKERS!

So for the record you have:

Instigators
"are players who have plans, who want to do things, to make an impact on the universe. They are the ones will go and organize people, or inspire people, to go do things. There's always someone starting it. There's always someone that says, ‘I'm going to have THAT’."

Enablers
"are the people who make the logistics for these large-scale things actually work. They are people who run mad spreadsheets to organize production lines for war efforts, they are people who manage roles and membership of big corporations and alliances, they build tools to do different tasks. And we kind of have a history of treating these people like…shit. We put these people through a lot of painful, unnecessary work."

Lurkers
"*stands up* Hello....my name *clears throat* is ROCK MELTER... And uhh
*shuffles feet* I am a lurker..."

Any rate, I really don't know why I
use to lurk in the shadows . I guess I just feel I didn't really have any conversation to
contribute to the whole Eve community. I usually cruise the forums and blogs once or twice a day. I agree
with a lot of you that there's been a bunch of mean/whining posts, but overall the
forums are a really good resource. I've made some good meta gaming decisions based on the information provided here. Though I have started blogging, very slowly, recently. I guess there's something to contribute
after all.

Want a clue how to spot lurkers? Go to your alliance forums or corporations forums. NOT the Official Eve Forums. Why you ask? Because on most Corp or Alliance forums it shows you the members that are viewing the forums. Take a look at that list. There may be one or two that are actuall posters on the forums. The others? They could be members for 10 years and never made a post. They read the forums every day, are always online but never get involved. There is one clue on how to spot your lurkers.

Want more in depth insight about Lurkers Seagull? I am at your disposal.

Players
"are the people that are none of the 3 above" For lack of an accurate number on this and I know CCP is working on this right now, I would say is 90% of the total number of players.

So what are you?
